Income For You, A Gift For Intermountain

Life income gifts have always been an attractive way for donors to receive income while benefiting a qualified charity. For Montana residents, the Montana Endowment Credit is an added incentive for the creation of a life income gift. Here is an example of how you might benefit from such a gift:

Mabel Greene, had been a faithful contributor to Intermountain for many years. She created a life income gift to accomplish four goals:

     * make a sizeable gift to Intermountain's endowment that would provide financial resources in perpetuity;
     * provide additional income for herself;
     * partially offset the cost of a gift through charitable tax relief;
     * avoid capital gains taxes that would otherwise be due if she sold appreciated property.

Mabel accomplished her goals by setting up a life income gift with $50,000 in appreciated stock. She will receive annually for life a payment of $4,000. This is a guaranteed return of 8%. In addition to saving $3,060 in taxes that might have otherwise been payable as capital gains had she sold the stock, Mabel received a $25,503 charitable gift deduction, an income tax savings of $7,140.

Further, because of the gift amount, her income, and tax bracket, Mabel was entitled to offset her state taxes for the maximum amount allowable for an individual, $10,000, in the year she created the gift. Total tax savings for Mabel exceeded $20,000.
